Paul is a career healthcare executive who has served in leadership positions (including CEO and COO) across multiple health systems. He possesses a wealth of knowledge in administration, growth and turnaround across the healthcare sector, with multi-faceted expertise encompassing not-for-profit, investor-owned and governmental facilities, physician practice management, and extending to both urban and rural settings.
Paul is proven to effectively turnaround distressed healthcare assets; notably in his role as CEO leading the successful operational turnaround of Helen Keller Hospital, a County-owned rural hospital in Sheffield, Alabama. Paul delivered a turnaround in consolidated performance from a net loss of $9 million in the first year to an annualized net income of $1.8 million. This turnaround included the merger and integration of Helen Keller within a local strategic hospital system, implementation of new services and a $75 million capital investment program, while improving physician satisfaction and achieving The Joint Commission accreditation in sepsis care.
Prior to joining Gibbins Advisors, Paul was engaged as Executive Administrator of Urology Centers of Alabama, an $88 million net revenue multi-specialty urology practice with 300 employees (including 53 physicians and advanced practice providers). During his tenure, Paul developed and implemented a “stay independent” business plan, while improving physician net income by $2 million year-on-year and growing revenue by 10%.
• Chief Operating Officer at Brookwood Baptist Medical Centre / Tenet Healthcare, successfully leading and expanding this 595-bed medical center throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. While responsible for day-to-day operations, developed a $40 million modernization plan and secured capital funding for surgical facilities, delivered $50 million cost reduction, expanded service offerings across robotic surgery, interventional neurology, cardiac and emergency, and led an overhaul of the food and nutrition program.
• As CEO of Greenbrier Valley Medical Center (Community Health System), led operational management of a 120-bed rural, sole community hospital in southern West Virginia. Achievements included recruiting physicians to market, starting five new physician practices, and improving core measures scores to 99% inpatient and 98% outpatient.
• Also within the Community Health System (Arkansas), served as Assistant CEO for a CHS owned hospital, and Vice President of Physician Services of Northwest Health System, with full P&L responsibility; and Assistant Vice President of Physician Services for Northwest Health System, responsible for an employed physician network of 100 providers in locations across northwest Arkansas.
