SPOTLIGHT: MISSION HEALTH SYSTEM

From 2019 to 2024, GIBBINS ADVISORS served as the Independent Monitor for HCA’s acquisition of Mission Health System in Western North Carolina, a $1.5 billion purchase that included six hospitals among other healthcare facilities.

As Independent Monitor, we helped to determine if HCA fulfilled its commitments in the purchase agreement which included keeping major Mission Health facilities open, continuing to provide certain key services, continuing policies for uninsured and charity care, and making significant capital investments in promised projects and programs.

Our evaluation process involved review of HCA’s reports and data analysis, site visits, and receiving comments and input from the public. We advised Dogwood Health Trust and six advisory boards on HCA’s compliance and held quarterly meetings with Dogwood and the office of the North Carolina Attorney General.

Community engagement was an important aspect of the role. We hosted numerous community meetings across Mission Health’s primary geographic service areas and established a website for the Independent Monitor, including an information portal which provided an easy forum for community members to submit information or feedback.
