Life Care Distress Means Senior Risk, Private Equity Opportunity

Gibbins Advisors research was featured in a recent Bloomberg Law Deep Dive article by James Nani examining rising distress among life plan / continuing care retirement communities (CCRCs).

The article highlighted Houston’s Buckingham Senior Living Community and broader resident risks tied to entrance-fee refund structures amid bankruptcy-driven sales. According to Gibbins Advisors data, 24 CCRC bankruptcies have been filed since 2019, and Chapter 11 filings across the senior living sector increased 18% in 2025.

Gibbins Advisors Principal and Co-Founder Clare Moylan was quoted in the article, commenting on how outcomes can hinge on service mix and acuity, particularly when a community’s capacity is weighted too heavily toward skilled nursing, which can intensify margin pressure.
