Situation Overview

Brookfield acquired Healthscope with the ambition of transforming it from a federated network of hospitals into an integrated healthcare system. Following the acquisition, a new executive team was installed (with the exception of the CMO) and had just commenced developing a 5-year strategic plan when COVID-19 hit.

Role

Engaged by the company across multiple workstreams from 2020 to 2022:

  • COVID-19 Response: Appointed Director – COVID Response to lead crisis management.

  • Strategy Development: Supported creation of a 5-year strategic plan and corporate planning infrastructure.

  • Performance Improvement: Evaluated organization-wide savings and revenue opportunities in collaboration with regional executive leaders to solve for a $10m EBITDA budget gap.

Approach

  • Crisis Response: Built clear structure around key workstreams, objectives, accountabilities, governance and meetings, cross-discipline problem solving and managing risks & issues.

  • Strategic Planning: Worked with leaders on strategy formulation (incl. industry analysis, ideation, option evaluation, competitor/market review, financial models, initiative prioritization and operating model) and then aligning various business strategies under a single organization narrative.

  • Corporate planning: Identified gap in corporate planning and designed templates that executives used to support 5-year department planning and budgeting to lift organizational maturity.
